Mr. Russell Kerns
Chief Russel Kerns is the firefighting instructor at EGSIC. He is a highly experienced firefighter with a distinguished career spanning over 33 years. After serving six years as a firefighter in the U.S. Air Force, he dedicated the majority of his career to Dulles International Airport, retiring as the Battalion Chief of Operations.
Throughout his career, Chief Kerns has been passionate about training and mentoring future firefighters. Since 1988, he has certified over 200 students, instilling in them the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in this demanding profession.
Currently, Chief Kerns serves as the Volunteer Chief of the Shawnee Firehouse in the City of Winchester. His commitment to public safety is unwavering, and he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the John Handley Firefighting Program.
Chief Kerns has been recognized for his outstanding service with numerous awards, including a USAF Meritorious Service Medal, a Letter of Commendation for his heroic response to the 9/11 Pentagon attack, and multiple Unit Citation Awards for his contributions to tunnel collapse response and hazardous materials training.
