Substitute Resources, Qualifications & Compensation

  • Absence Management logoSubstitute teachers are a very important part of WPS and enable us to have a quality instructional program for our students.  We have high expectations for our substitutes and we rely on them to offer engaging and meaningful work to students in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Anyone interested in applying to substitute teach for WPS must meet the requirements listed below and complete the application process. Visit our application system if you wish to apply.

    • Must possess good moral character and must pass required criminal background checks.
    • Class II Substitute - Must hold an associate’s degree or possess a minimum of sixty hours of college credits and are paid $90.00 per day.
    • Class I Substitute - Must hold a Virginia teaching license or a four-year college degree and are paid $100.00 per day.

    Pointing hand Substitute Teacher Training Occurs Once Per Year in the Month of October.


    Applications will typically be reviewed during the month of September in preparation for the training in October. Substitute teachers must complete the orientation and training process, complete all required paperwork, and be approved by the Winchester Public School Board before securing a substitute position.

Substitute Support Positions

  • Substitute Teaching Assistant applicants must have graduated from high school, but do not need college credits and are paid at Step 1 of the Teaching Assistant pay scale.
