The Winchester Public Schools’ English Learners (EL) program serves over 800 students in grades K-12. The program emphasizes English language acquisition through academic content-based study. English Learners at all WPS schools may receive co-taught instruction with a content or classroom teacher who is joined by an EL teacher in supporting the language development within a specific content area, or they may receive some pull-out model services where an EL teacher is focusing on language skills using academic content. Students arriving at the secondary level as a “Newcomer” to English receive Newcomer/ English language development classes, and on the high school level may take some introductory courses which prepare them for academic course work in specific subject areas such as Algebra, Biology, and History.
For more information about the EL program, please contact Kimberly Peterson, EL Program Coordinator at 540-667-4253, extension 63008. For information about the program in another language, please contact the Parent Liaison at your school.
