Course Trajectory

  • VDOE seal of biliteracy exampleStudents in the dual language immersion program in elementary school can continue their programming into the intermediate and middle schools. By continually being immersed in Spanish instruction, they will have more opportunities in high school to expand their learning. Students who do not wish to continue the dual language immersion program must inform the school of this request.

If a student scores Intermediate-advanced or higher on the STAMP assessment, they will qualify to earn a Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma. Students must then pass all reading and writing SOL assessments to qualify. More information on the Seal of Biliteracy can be found on the Virginia Department of Education's website.

Grade Level Dual Language Immersion

  • 5th Grade Dual Language Immersion

Students will take a combination of English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and History. Depending on our teachers, students will be immersed in Spanish instruction for 50% (at a minimum) of their core classes.

At the end of their 5th-grade school year, students will take the STAMP assessment. This test will be used to measure their proficiency in Spanish.

    6th Grade Dual Language Immersion

Students will take a combination of English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, Spanish Language Arts, and History. Depending on our teachers, students will be immersed in Spanish instruction for 50% (at a minimum) of their core classes.

    7th Grade Dual Language Immersion

Students will enroll in Heritage Speakers I as an elective. This is a high-school course, giving them high school credit. They will also take History II as a dual language class. Math, English, and Science will be taught in English.

  • 8th Grade Dual Language Immersion

Students will enroll in Heritage Speakers II as an elective. This is a high-school course, giving them high school credit. They will also take Civics & Economics as a dual language class. Math, English, and Science will be taught in English.

At the end of 8th grade, students will take the STAMP assessment. Based on their proficiency scores, several outcomes can be chosen:

    • A student enrolls in Spanish III, or Heritage Speakers III as a 9th grader.
    • Students score high enough to have Spanish III waived, earning enough credits toward an honors' diploma. The student can then choose Spanish IV, AP Spanish, another language, or no longer take a foreign language course.
    • A student enrolls in French I, German I, or another language and may complete two courses to earn an honors' diploma.

These courses should be chosen with a school counselor to ensure students choose the path they will be most successful in taking.
