Winchester Public Schools is happy to announce that Handley senior James Fowler has been named a Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. Principal Susan Braithwaite recently presented a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) to this scholastically talented senior.

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were recognized for their exceptional academic promise. James was hopeful that he would receive this recognition. "I took the PSAT my sophomore year," James said. "Then, I took it again junior year to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program."

James is a four-year athlete on the soccer team for the Handley Judges. Off the field, he is Vice president of the National Honor Society and Secretary of Key Club. James has been inspired by his teachers at Handley. “My favorite class was U.S. History,” James said. “Mr. Keller was such a great teacher and I learned a lot from him.” Mr. Jeff Keller was named the statewide 2024 Virginia Teacher of The Year in May. Looking to the future, James is applying to colleges to study economics or business.
