Mountain Vista Seniors Honored
In late April, four gifted John Handley High School seniors were recognized for their accomplishments at Senior Night for Mountain Vista Governor's School. Handley students won 2 of 6 scholarships presented to MVGS seniors who attend from 7 different school districts!
Ashley Truban
Ashley Truban was awarded the Joanne Cherefko Honorary Scholarship. She earned a General Education Certificate and will be attending the University of Oxford next year. Each student had a teacher from MVGS who spoke about them:
"Ashley is serious about success. We’ve lost count of how many colleges she’s applied to, visited, and been accepted by. With an almost supernatural motivation and drive, Ashley has tackled any obstacle in her path with laser focus and a pleasant demeanor. Ashley is happiest when she can use her knowledge in concrete ways, and she finds fulfillment in creating positive change in the world around her."
Benjamin Schaefer
Benjamin Schaefer earned an Associate of Science Degree with a Computer Science Specialization from Laurel Ridge Community College. Next year, he will attend Roanoke College. Each student had a teacher from MVGS who spoke about them:
"Even at birth, Ben couldn’t stand to accept second place, beating his sibling into the world by several minutes. That confidence and hunger for life are matched only by his charm and his attention to the MVGS office’s candy bowl. He’s as happy to spend his time performing as a magician and as an actor, and we have enjoyed being his audience. We hope that life continues to be sweet for Ben."
Juliette Shaefer
Juliette Shaefer earned an Associate of Science Degree with a Computer Science Specialization from Laurel Ridge Community College. Next year, she will be attending the Webb Institute. Each student had a teacher from MVGS who spoke about them:
"Juliette is a visionary engineer with a heart for creativity and precision. Her analytical mind is a paintbrush, bringing vibrant colors to complex problems. She is a symphony of intelligence and imagination, with each note played with purpose and poise. Juliette's attention to detail is her conductor's baton, bringing harmony to every aspect of her life. Her warm personality is a canvas, inviting anyone to share in her artistic spirit and encouraging them to find their own unique expression. Juliette, an inspiration to all who seek to create a better world."
Afnan Akhand
Afnan Akhand was awarded the Sheila Wolk Memorial Scholarship. Though he has not yet committed to a school, he will be an asset to any place he chooses. Each student had a teacher from MVGS who spoke about them:
"Afnan’s kind manner, keen intelligence, and adept troubleshooting skills will serve him well as he pursues a career in medicine. Whether assisting at a medical clinic or delivering meals at Thanksgiving, Afnan’s caring and compassion are evident. On the track and in Robotics, Afnan has shown us the leadership skills that will propel him to success in the future."
Congratulations to these outstanding Handley seniors!
