Mr. Hoffman
Mr. Hoffman is in his seventh year at Daniel Morgan and was a science and math teacher for eighteen years in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He has a B.A. degree in education from Shepherd and two Masters degrees in technology and library science. He grew up in Vienna, Virginia and has lived in Colorado and North Carolina. He has also traveled around the country and has visited and camped in every state in the country except Alaska and Hawaii. Although Mr. Hoffman loves to read, his strengths are in technology, math, and science. He is looking forward to opening the Daniel Morgan Makerspace and hopes to help students with any and all requests or problems that they may have, while encouraging reading and literacy as much as possible.
Before becoming a media specialist, he taught math and science at Harpers Ferry Middle School in West Virginia. This background allowed Mr. Hoffman to build and implement a Makerspace area in the Daniel Morgan library. The Makerspace concept is meant to be a space where students can explore, create, and learn based on their own interests and curiosities. It is not meant to be a classroom or pre-planned curriculum area. Students can explore a number of projects, challenges, and explorations both in small groups and as individuals. There will be multiple opportunities to learn basic coding including online Hot Wheels challenges, Ozobots, Lego EV3, Turtle Paint, and Scratch. Vinyl cutters, 3d Printers, Codeable flying drones, Keva Planks, Cubelets, Little Bits, and a homemade virtual reality sandbox will also be utilized in the pursuit of knowledge. While students will occasionally visit the space with their classes for curriculum support, the hope is that they visit on their own when time permits to follow their own path.
