5th Grade Art
Grade Five Visual Art enables students to use their knowledge and skills to synthesize information, allowing them to produce and respond to works of art. Our emphasis is on communication of personal values and beliefs in art appreciation and production. Students gain fluency in using and understanding the elements of art (color, form, line, shape, space, texture, value) in combination with exposure to the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm, unity, and variety) as they relate to artistic expression and communication. There are five main strands of study in our current standards of learning:
- Creative Process
- Critical Thinking and Communication
- History, Culture, and Citizenship
- Innovation in the Arts
- Technique and Application
6th Grade Art
Grade Six Visual Art emphasizes exploration of studio processes and creation of original works of art to convey meaning. Students are still using the elements of art (color, form, line, shape, space, texture, value) and are now asked to use them in combination with the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm, unity, variety) as a framework. Students investigate a variety of ideas/ themes for creating art and build upon their knowledge through cross-curricular connections. Through critical analysis and evaluation, students determine how artists convey meaning through the use of forms, media, and symbols. They learn their strengths and learn to refine and improve their skills in the areas of weakness. There are five main strands of study in our current standards of learning:
