Welcome to the Library

  • The library is the heart of the school.  The JKES Library provides learning resources and recreational reading materials for students and staff.  The library is a welcoming and safe environment for students to explore and personalize their academic growth and individual interests.  In addition to print books, the library offers digital resources, such as e-books and online databases, including PebbleGo and World Book Online.  Students attend library class as part of the Specials rotation.

Reading Tips for Parents

    • Read aloud to your child.

Our Librarian

  • Athena Michael

    Dr. Athena Michael
    Librarian, EdD, MLIS

    Dr. Michael returns to her first love "Librarianship" after spending nearly twenty-five years committed to the library profession working for industry leaders such as John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Ingram Industries, EBSCO Industries, and Simon & Schuster and actively working to promote global literacy through Committee Leadership positions within the American Library Association, American Association of Publishers, and international organizations focused on building libraries in developing countries. Dr. Michael earned an EdD from Shenandoah University in 2011 focusing her studies on collaborative librarianship—The Combined School-Public Library Model and Community Literacy.

    In 1988, Dr. Michael began her early career in librarianship as the second children's librarian at the Handley Library. Dr. Michael graduated with honors from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and received a MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Michael has a professional certificate in Book Publishing from the University of Virginia's Publishing & Communications Institute.
