Welcome to Winchester Public Schools, where we provide free public education to students living in the City of Winchester (22601 zip code).

Age Requirements for Registration

Children who will be 5 years old by September 30, 2026 should be registered for Kindergarten for 2026-2027. Children who will be 3 or 4 years old by September 30, 2026 may be eligible for preschool. Preschool enrollment is not guaranteed. See step 2 to learn more.

Kindergarten Camp

Kindergarten Camp gives rising kindergarteners a glimpse of what life will be like in Kindergarten! Held June 23, 24, 25 (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at FDES, GQES, JKES & VACDES. Modified Transportation Provided. Breakfast and Lunch Provided.

Dual Language

The Dual Language program in Winchester Public Schools is designed for families who would like their children to learn another language while receiving the same high quality academic curriculum as students throughout the division. In keeping with the vision of WPS, the mission of the Dual Language Program is to provide an enriched bilingual, biliterate, and culturally competent educational experience for all students.

For 2026-2027, WPS will offer Spanish-English two-way Dual Language programs at the following schools:

  • Frederick Douglass Elementary School: Grades K-4
  • Garland R Quarles Elementary School: K-1
  • John Kerr Elementary School: K-1
  • Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School: Grades K-4
  • Daniel Morgan Intermediate School: Grades 5-6
  • Daniel Morgan Middle School: Grades 7-8

Enrollment in the Dual Language Immersion program is available for rising kindergarten students in all school zones. There is no tuition for city residents. Parents may register for the Dual Language Immersion Program by contacting their student's school.
