During the week of February 17th, students at all four WPS elementary schools welcomed a special guest speaker, Captain Barrington Irving from The Flying Classroom

In 2007, Captain Barrington Irving became the youngest person and first African American pilot to fly solo around the world at the age of 23.   He was born in Jamaica and grew up in Miami, Florida. 

He founded Experience Aviation, a non-profit educational company that offers STEM experiences for students.  Captain Irving expanded his educational involvement with The Flying Classroom, which is based on Captain Irving's global travels and experiences.  The Flying Classroom lessons are available online and focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), as well as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, geography, literacy, and more.

During his visit to Winchester Public Schools four elementary schools, Captain Irving shared videos and images from his global travels, including the future of transportation, 3D printing shoes, piloting a plane, eye surgery, camera pills to see the inside of the human body. and numerous interactions with wild animals, including snakes, tigers, sharks, and jellyfish.
