Welcome to Art

  • Art education is essential in the development of every child. At FDES, every child is an artist. In our art classes, we learn about artists and their historical and global contexts, explore various art techniques and mediums, and develop our critical and creative thinking skills. Most importantly, we are encouraged to think like artists. We take risks and celebrate mistakes, fostering an environment where creativity and innovation thrive.

As an art educator, I have the pleasure of watching children blossom into artists with distinct preferences and approaches to art. Thank you, and we look forward to an art-filled year!

What Are We Learning in Art?

  • Students are taught in accordance with Virginia and National art education standards. These standards are built upon the following principles to be developmentally appropriate and to have cross-curricular connections:

    • Visual Communication and Production: Students create works of art using various techniques and media, developing technical skills and utilizing elements and principles of design effectively.
    • Art History and Cultural Context: Students explore the historical and cultural significance of art, studying the contributions of artists from different times and places and understanding how art reflects and influences culture and society.
    • Analysis, Evaluation, and Critique: Students analyze and interpret works of art, evaluate art based on criteria such as craftsmanship, originality, and expression, and develop skills to critique their own work and the work of others constructively.
    • Aesthetics: Students explore concepts of beauty and aesthetic value, understand how personal experiences and cultural context influence perceptions of art, and reflect on the emotional and intellectual impact of art.
    • Safety: Students learn and practice safe and responsible use of art materials and tools in the classroom.

Additionally, our curriculum supports the holistic development of students by encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression, helping them to grow as individuals and to connect their learning in art to other areas of their lives.
