Advanced Math Pathways

Winchester Public Schools will design and implement division-wide, comprehensive learning pathways leading to workforce and college-ready graduates.  Part of this pathway plan is to implement Math course acceleration when appropriate for our students.  We believe that going deeper, instead of faster, is imperative to our students' mastery of Math.  Acceleration through the Math standards is a pathway for students who have a sound foundation in Math reasoning and understanding.  The following pathways for Advanced Math are attached.

To understand our reasoning and beliefs, we encourage you to read the following articles:

Please note, this pathway is designed for all students - not just our Gifted students. Nor does being gifted in math automatically place students on an advanced pathway.

● Students will get to Calculus in their senior year
● Students must score >500 to enter and continue on the

Advanced Math Pathway Double Accelerated Math Pathway (2 years advanced)

● Students will skip half of 6th and half of 7th grade standards
● Students will get to Calculus in their Junior year
● Double acceleration is typically reserved for students in the top 5% of math performance.
● Students must meet the following criteria to qualify for double acceleration:

   ○ >575 on 5th Grade SOL
   ○ >95% on 5th grade SGA
   ○ >95% on Unit Test Average in 5th grade
   ○ >75% on 6th Grade Placement Test
   ○ >60% on 7th Grade Placement Test

● Students must score > than 500 on 8th grade SOL to continue on to Algebra I in 7th grade.
● A parent or teacher must request a student to be assessed for entry into this pathway.

Students who do not show suggested mastery of math standards or struggle during the school year may be taken off their pathway to ensure their success in a more appropriate setting.

DMIS asks parents to carefully consider the maturity and math readiness of their child before requesting that their child be double-accelerated.
