In math we are using a strategy called number line shift to figureout how much change a person should get. We shift both theamount given and the amount spent down by .01 and thensubtract. For example $5.00 - $2.37 becomes $4.99-$2.36. Thisavoids the problem of having to subtract across zeros. Becausewe are shifting both amounts by .01 they stay the same distanceapart (difference).

Books that are too hard can still be enjoyed as a read aloud. Students in third grade still benefit from hearing stories and spending time with cherished adults.
