STUDENT USE OF PERSONALLY

OWNED ELECTRONIC DEVICES

 

Student use of any personally owned electronic device, including but not limited to laptops, tablets, iPods, iPads, and cell phones, shall adhere to the following regulations:

 

1.     The School Board assumes no liability for the loss, theft, or damage of any personally owned electronic device or the information stored on the device.

 

2.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices while on school property is prohibited unless a signed copy of the Parent Permission Form for Student Involvement granting permission for student use of personally owned electronic devices in accordance with this policy and the Policy IIBEA, Acceptable Computer System Use. is on file with the student’s school. (“WPS” or the “Division”).

 

3.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices shall be prohibited during instructional time unless a teacher directs students to use such devices for a specific educational task.  The personally owned electronic device shall be concealed and silenced during instructional time unless directed otherwise by the teacher.

 

4.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices during instructional time is allowed strictly at the teacher’s discretion.  There is no blanket teacher approval for student use of personally owned electronic devices; permission to use such devices is to be granted on a day-by-day basis by teachers who plan to use the devices for instructional purposes. 

 

5.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices during the school day is limited as follows:

a.     Elementary school students may NOT use personally owned electronic devices during school day. Students may have personally owned electronic devices in their possession; however, these devices must be silenced and concealed at all times during the school day.

 

b.      Middle school students may NOT use personally owned electronic devices during school day except as approved by the teacher as described in Paragraphs 3 and 4 above.  Students may have personally owned electronic devices in their possession; however, these devices must be silenced and concealed at all times during the school day except as approved by the teacher as described in Paragraphs 3 and 4 above.

c.     Middle school students may use personally owned electronic devices before and after the school day, and at extracurricular events after school hours.

d.     High school students may use personally owned electronic devices as follows:  non-instructional times during the school day (e.g. during lunch or between classes), before and after the school day, and at extracurricular events.  When in use, students shall use headphones or ear buds so as not to create a disruption.  During instructional time, the student's personally owned electronic device shall be concealed and silenced at all times except as approved by the teacher as described in Paragraphs 3 and 4 above.

e.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices on school buses is subject to the safety guidelines established by the Transportation Department and bus driver.

 

6.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices anywhere on school property is limited as follows:

a.     Students who connect to the Internet shall use the school’s WiFi system, not the device’s 3G or 4G capabilities. 

b.     Students shall not access or attempt to access Internet websites or content blocked by the Division’s Internet filters.

c.     No Division owned software shall be installed on personally owned electronic devices.

d.     Students shall comply with all local, state and federal laws related to personally owned technology.

e.     Students shall comply with the School Board’s Acceptable Computer System Use Policy (Policy IIBEA). 

f.     Students shall comply with all other applicable School Board policies, regulations and directives, including, but not limited to, those prohibiting bullying, cheating, discrimination, harassment, or unauthorized sharing of assignments or information on assignments.

g.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices is a privilege not a right.  An administrator may revoke a student’s use of personally owned electronic devices on school property at any time and any teacher who otherwise allows student use of personally owned electronic devices may revoke a student’s use of personally owned electronic devices while in the classroom.

h.      Students shall not use devices to record, transmit, or post photographic images or video of a person or persons.

 

7.     The Division reserves the right to:

a.     Monitor and log activity of student use on personally owned electronic devices connected to the computer system, as that term is defined in Policy IIBEA (“Computer System”), including without limitation, the WPS Internet and other network systems.

b.     Determine when and where students may connect personally owned electronic devices to the Computer System.

c.     Make determinations on whether specific student uses of personally owned electronic devices are consistent with Policy IIBEA.

d.     Regulate the student's access to the Computer System.

 

8.     The School Board and its employees shall not perform nor be responsible for technical services of any type on a personally owned electronic device not owned or leased by the School Board.

 

9.     Student use of personally owned electronic devices in violation of this Policy or any other School Board policy, regulation or directive will result in appropriate disciplinary action as specified in Policy IIBEA, the Code of Student Conduct, and any other applicable School Board policy, regulation or directive.
