Winchester Public Schools has implemented a new online registration process. All new student enrollments will utilize PowerSchool Registration and can be completed from any electronic device with access to the Internet. Parents without Internet access should contact the enrolling school to set up a registration appointment.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING

Parents registering children to enter Virginia schools for the first time are required by law to present the following information:

  • a certified copy of the child's birth record
  • a certificate of physical examination from a physician or a health department
  • proof of residency
  • an immunization certificate containing complete dates for Hepatitis B, DPT, polio, and MMR immunizations

Parents are urged to register the child even if all of the above have not been obtained. Questions concerning registration and enrollment should be addressed to the school the child will attend.

VIRGINIA ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • A child must be five years old on or before September 30 of the upcoming school year to enroll in kindergarten.
  • A certified copy of the child's birth record is required.
  • A certificate of physical examination from a physician or a health department which was completed no earlier than one year prior to the first day of school..
  • Proof of residency in the City of Winchester. The parent or legal guardian must provide at least one document from the following list. The document must show the parent/guardian’s name and current Winchester address of residence as it appears on school registration documents. It must indicate a street address. A post office box or business address is not acceptable.
    • Utility bill, not more than two months old, issued to applicant (examples include gas, electric, water/sewer, or phone bill). Cellular phone, cable and pager bills are not accepted.
    • Receipt for personal property taxes or real estate taxes paid within the last year to the Commonwealth of Virginia or the City of Winchester.
    • Current homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy.
    • Current deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement or residential rental/ lease agreement.
    If the parent/guardian is unable to provide proof of residency in his/her own name, he/she must provide at least one document from the above list displaying the name of the person who is providing housing to the parent and student. In addition, the parent/guardian must provide a notarized form, signed by that person, verifying the parent/guardian’s and student’s residency at the address shown (complete Form JEC-R5). If further determination is needed, a referral should be made to the grade level Student Support Specialist or the Coordinator of Student Support Services. A home visit may be conducted by Student Support staff as necessary.

Parents should register the child even if all of the above have not been obtained. Questions concerning registration and enrollment should be addressed to the school the child will attend. IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

When enrolling your child, an immunization certificate requiring the following must be presented:

  • 4 DPT or DTap: at least one dose of DTap or DTP after 4th birthday unless received 6 doses before 4th birthday
  • 4 Polio: at least one dose after 4th birthday unless received 4 doses of all OPV or all IPV prior to 4th birthday
  • 2 Measles: 1st dose on/after 12 months of age; 2nd dose prior to entering kindergarten
  • 2 Mumps: on/after 12 months of age
  • 1 Rubella: on/after 12 months of age
  • NOTE: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) requirements are also met by 2 MMR - 1st dose on/after 12 months of age and 2nd dose prior to entering kindergarten.
  • Hepatitis B: 3 doses required (2 doses if Merck adult formulation given between 11-15 years of age)
  • 2 Varicella: 1st dose on/after 12 months of age; 2nd prior to enrollment in kindergarten

PRE-SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

All children who will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2017 (no exceptions), must be registered for kindergarten. Pre-school children must be 4 years of age by September 30, 2017. Registration for pre-school and Kindergarten children entering school for the first time will be held March 6, 2017, 4:00pm-8:00pm at Daniel Morgan Middle School. After the March 6 event, registration will continue at each elementary school on Tuesday-Friday, 9:00am-3:00pm. Parents wishing to delay their child's attendance for one year must submit a written request to the Superintendent of Schools.
